Invisalign for Your Wedding

Between the venue, the dress fittings and the seating plan, it’s easy to forget that your smile is in almost every photo from your wedding day. If you’re already straightening your teeth with Invisalign, or considering starting before you say “I do”, you probably have a few practical questions: how long does treatment actually take, can you take your aligners out for the ceremony, and what happens if your partner wants to kiss you on the dance floor?

As Preston’s Diamond Invisalign provider, we treat a steady stream of brides and grooms-to-be every wedding season, so we get asked these questions a lot. Here’s everything you need to know about fitting Invisalign around your wedding timeline, and getting the most out of your treatment before the big day.

How far in advance should you start Invisalign before your wedding?

This is the question we’re asked most, and the honest answer is: as early as possible. At Holly Dental, most patients complete treatment in around 9 months, but treatment can take anywhere from 3 to 18 months depending on how much movement your teeth need. So the ideal starting point is as soon as you’ve picked a date.

As a rough guide for planning your wedding smile makeover:

  • 12+ months before the wedding: Ideal. Gives time for a full course of treatment plus a retainer settling-in period, with room to spare for whitening.
  • 6–9 months before: Our typical treatment length, so this is a realistic window for mild-to-moderate cases starting now.
  • Under 3 months before: Starting a new course this close to the day isn’t something we’d usually recommend, but if you’re already partway through treatment, we can plan your aligner changes around the date instead.

If you’re not sure which bracket you fall into, that’s exactly what a consultation is for. As Preston’s Diamond Invisalign provider, our dentist Dr Andy Holly has treated cases ranging from simple straightening to complex bite correction, and can map out a treatment timeline against your wedding date and tell you honestly whether it’s achievable. Consultations are free, secured with a fully refundable £30 deposit, so there’s no pressure to commit before you know your options.

Can I take Invisalign out for my wedding day?

Yes, you can! This is one of the real advantages of Invisalign over fixed braces for anyone getting married mid-treatment. Because the aligners are removable, you can take them out for the ceremony, speeches, and photos, and pop them back in afterwards.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Aligners need 20–22 hours a day to stay on track. Taking them out for a few hours on your wedding day won’t undo your progress, but it’s worth timing it sensibly rather than leaving them out all day and evening.
  • Bring your aligner case, not a napkin. It sounds obvious, but “wrapped it in a serviette and it went in the bin” is a genuinely common story we hear. Ask your maid of honour, best man or a parent to be the designated keeper of the case for the day.
  • Plan your aligner swap around the date, not on top of it. If you’re due to move onto a new set the week of your wedding, ask us about shifting the change by a few days either side. A fresh set can bring a couple of days of mild pressure and discomfort, which is not what you want mid-ceremony.
  • Reinsert as soon as you reasonably can. After the meal, drinks and cutting the cake, get them back in. Little and often beats one long stretch out.

Can you make out with Invisalign in?

Yes, you can. Honestly, aligners aren’t the barrier people expect. They’re thin, close-fitting and, once you’re used to wearing them (which usually takes a few days at the start of treatment), most people forget they’re there entirely, including during a kiss. Compared to fixed braces, which can occasionally catch or feel more obvious, Invisalign is genuinely one of the more low-key options for anyone conscious of PDA on the dance floor or, for that matter, the first kiss at the altar.

If you’d rather remove them for the ceremony itself, that’s a perfectly reasonable choice too — plenty of our patients do exactly that, then put them straight back in afterwards.

Building a bridal dental care checklist

Straight teeth are only part of the picture. A lot of our bridal patients build a broader wedding dentistry plan into their run-up, which might include:

  • Whitening, usually done in the final few weeks before the wedding once Invisalign treatment (or a course of it) is complete, so your smile can look its best on the day itself.
  • A hygiene appointment the week before, for that just-left-the-dentist clean feeling.
  • Retainer wear, which starts the moment your active Invisalign treatment ends. It’s worth timing this carefully if you want your teeth fully settled, not still shifting slightly, for the big day.

If you’re planning whitening alongside Invisalign, it’s worth asking us about sequencing. Whitening is generally more effective once your teeth are in their final position.

Planning locally: Preston’s bridal shops

If your smile is on the to-do list, the dress probably is too. Preston and the surrounding area has a genuinely good spread of independent bridal boutiques worth knowing about if you haven’t started dress shopping yet:

  • Karen Riding Bridal, on New Hall Lane, stocks a wide range of designer gowns at accessible prices and now also carries prom wear.
  • Love Story Bridal Boutique in nearby Longridge is a family-run, award-winning boutique known for its guided styling process and £2,500-and-under sample sizes.
  • Feathers & Florence, just outside Preston in Grimsargh, offers a more editorial, boutique-studio bridal experience with a curated designer edit.
  • Dreamcatcher Bridal Boutique in Kirkham stocks both wedding and bridesmaid dresses for brides across the Fylde coast and Preston area.

Common questions we hear from Preston brides and grooms

Will I be able to eat and drink normally at my wedding breakfast? Yes! Take your aligners out to eat and drink anything other than water, then clean your teeth and the aligners before putting them back in, just as you would on any other day.

What if I lose an aligner on the day? It happens, and it’s not a disaster. Get in touch and we’ll advise whether to move onto the next set early, go back a stage, or get a replacement made, depending on where you are in your treatment journey.

Can I have my wedding photos taken while wearing Invisalign? You can, though most people prefer to remove them for formal photos and put them back in straight after. Entirely your call.

I’m getting married in under three months. Is it too late to start? Possibly for a full course, but book a consultation regardless. We’ll be upfront about what’s realistic in your timeframe, whether that’s Invisalign, whitening alone, or a plan that continues sensibly past the wedding.
